Frank Lacey writes contemporary classical, predominantly tonal music. He received his Master's in Music late in life, after working for several years as a commercial composer. He currently lives in Japan with his family.
Sextet for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, piano, cello, and bass. I enjoyed writing the variety of styles, moods, modes, and tonality of this piece. The opening motif, repeated and alluded to throughout, is built upon a basic C major triad that is modified by a modern addition of notes deliberately outside of the C scale. The tonality is clear cut...and tangled. Some sections are bright and bouncy, some lyrically beautiful, some rhythmically driving, some humorous, some sweeping and orchestral. Enjoy.
Trio for piano, bass, and violin, with a jazz influence. The piece arrived as the opening riff came to me while I was playing around at the piano. It stuck with me, and I felt compelled to build upon it. The piece begins straightforwardly, driven by the riff that underpins the melodic violin, and then shifts gears for the lyrical arco bass solo, only to return to the original theme, with a brief detour through what I took to calling "the ridiculous section."
Sextet for guitars, flute, clarinet, bass, and cajon. I am not a real guitar player, but I wanted to write an easy piece even I could play. Writing a simple, catchy melody is actually one of the harder things to do in music, and so I set out to meet the challenge.
